Student Life at ASA

What is there to say about Student Life here at ASA? Lots! We've lined up a number of talented contributors that will keep this page interesting, topical and fun.

This is where you'll see new images of life here at ASA, links to articles and performances of interest to our student body and seasonal news not covered in ASA This Week. You'll want to check back often so see who's blogging for (hopefully) everyone's interest.

National Honor Society (NHS)

National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the nation's premier high school organizations that recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. With the slogan "Saving the World One Scoop at a Time", ASA's chapter of NHS sells ice cream every Friday at lunch in order to raise money for various charities. NHS also takes part in walks for charitable causes as well as hosts the annual Valentine's Dance. Invitations to apply for membership are extended to juniors and seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.

ASA Academic Decathlon

The Academic Decathlon is a ten-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students. Each high school enters a team of nine students: 3 "A" or Honor students, 3 "B" or Scholastic students, and 3 "C" or Varsity students. The theme for the 2007-2008 Academic Decathlon season is "The Civil War." Academic Decathlon meets Thursday at lunch to prepare for a regional competition in February and state competition in March. Preparation includes studying material individually, writing prepared speeches, and practicing impromtu speeches.

MATHCOUNTS at ASA

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. The mission of MATHCOUNTS® is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States. With the generous support of all MATHCOUNTS sponsors and volunteers, and leadership of the National Society of Professional Engineers at the local and state levels, MATHCOUNTS is providing today's students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering or mathematics careers.

MATHCOUNTS at ASA meets weekly at lunch to explore mathematical ideas, problems and solutions. In addition to weekly meetings, we host a schoolwide MATHCOUNTS competition each January and compete in both regional and state competitions.

ASA Amnesty International Club

ASA Amnesty is a human rights and activism club that focuses on current issues facing the world. Although it might seem like this from the name, we are not limited only to the issues that Amnesty International wants us to explore, but we focus on issues that are important to us, such as local issues; for example, we once held a very successful book drive for the Crisis Nursery. We've also increased awareness of environmental issues and recycling on campus, raised money for several charitable organizations including Save Darfur and the Heifer Project, and we often engage in discussions of international politics. By helping causes and discussing politics, this club is good for the heart and the mind.

The Manga/Anime Zoo Club

We meet on Wednesdays at lunch in room 9. We discuss and analize manga, anime and Japanese culture.

Middle School Assembly

Middle School Assembly is a chance for students in sixth through eighth grade to learn about student governance and involvement in the community. At weekly meetings during lunch period on Tuesdays, students learn how to plan and advertise school social events, fundraise to cover the cost of these events, and even how to reach out to the greater Phoenix community through service projects of their choosing. With teacher facilitation, students learn how to have a voice in their school community and become future leaders. All interested students are welcome to attend the initial meetings, but commitment to the weekly meetings is expected thereafter to maintain good standing as a member of the Assembly.
