Over the past months you have probably heard or read about Prop123, the proposition that would settle the lawsuit on K-12 funding between the State and public schools (which includes charter schools like ASA). The fact sheet below helps highlight some of the key considerations of this settlement that was designed to restore funding to Arizona public schools. This fact sheet has been provided by the Arizona Charter School Association.
The outcome of the proposition will determine our budget for fiscal year 2017 and beyond. As such we have prepared two separate budgets. If Prop 123 does not pass, we will probably get a small increase to our budget for fiscal year 2017, currently expected to be about 1%. If Prop 123 passes, ASA would receive an unrestricted annual budget increase each year for the next 10 years. Estimates provided by the state indicate an approximate $180,000 in fiscal year 2017. We are preparing a second budget with such an increase along with a framework for allocating those funds. Preliminarily, these monies have been earmarked (by ASA leadership) for faculty salary, professional development, and classroom resources to support learning.
Over the coming months both budgets will be reviewed by the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors. Upon final determination of the State's fiscal year 2017 budget and the outcome of Prop 123 the ASA Board will approve a final budget for the school.
